Contaminated "Naturcold" Cough Syrup in Cameroon Raises Global Health Concerns and Prompts WHO Alert
In a press statement released on Wednesday, the global health agency disclosed that the syrup, known as “Naturcold,” has been found to contain hazardous levels of diethylene glycol, prompting concerns over its safety and potential health risks.
The WHO stated that samples of the syrup were made available to them on June 27 and were subsequently analyzed in a contracted and prequalified laboratory.
The analysis revealed that the product contained alarming amounts of diethylene glycol as contaminants. Diethylene glycol, a colorless and odorless liquid with a sweet taste, is sometimes used as a cheaper substitute for glycerin in cough syrups.
According to the WHO, the acceptable limit for diethylene glycol in such products should not exceed 0.10 percent. Shockingly, samples of the “Naturcold” cough syrup contained diethylene glycol levels as high as 28.6 percent, significantly surpassing the safety threshold.
